Chapter 31

T he emotion behind his voice was both rage and sorrow, laced with a heavy dose of self-loathing for spice. He still blamed himself for what happened. He didn’t need to say the words; she could see it in his posture, his eyes, begging her silently to tell him it wasn’t his fault, that he hadn’t let everyone down. After centuries of living with his past, it seemed to still plague him. He hid it well, of course, as this was the first sign she’d seen him struggling with his inability to change the past. Lola may only have known the man for a few weeks, but she was practically living with him, in every essence of the word except for the biblical sense.

She was beginning to know this man. She understood that when he was frustrated, the vein in his neck could be seen beating a tempo. When he grew quiet, he was pissed. If he was talking, then he’d already made up his mind about what was coming next. And when he looked at her like that, like she was the only woman in the room, no matter that she literally was, well, hell, she’d only seen him look at her like that once before, when they were on her balcony, and she flinched away from his touch.

God, it seemed like a lifetime ago when he was telling her he wasn’t the man in her nightmares who killed her. It was true, he wasn’t the same man who killed her. He wasn’t even the same man from that night, nor was she the same woman. Too much had happened, too many pasts revealed, too many emotions felt. They were no longer just a man and a woman in the same house. They now had a history.

But did they have a future?

Then, he was just a man wanting to take away her pain without knowing the cause. And now, even after seeing that he was the reason for her pain, he still looked at her as if he could cure her ailments. But her problem was no longer about dying in a nightmare. That was taken care of. The challenge for her now was, what happened next? Lola wanted more from him; she could deny it no more. Hell, she stopped denying it the minute he looked at her on the balcony. That night she saw a man willing to fight her battles for her. Not only to take on the demons in the real world but those she fought on another plane. That night he was willing to take on her past, despite knowing it was his past as well.

She needed to tell him. Before another moment passed between them, she needed to tell him the rest of it. He thought he knew it all, and before he’d spoken, she believed him. But now things were falling into place, things about her past, about why she was a Civilian, an unclaimed one. Like his past, she never spoke of it.
